A day in the Life of a Small Business Area Leader …

Can you describe your role within Business Banking & how long have you been doing it?

My role within Business Banking is to support and develop small business managers to on-board and grow our new start up customers across the East London community. I play a key role in encouraging and motivating our small business managers to think of new ways to support our small business customers as they start their journey into business. I have been doing this role for 2 and half years and originally come from Community Banking. I was able apply the skills gained from my various role to engage with the external market and build a network across East London’s small business community.

How did you get to where you are?

I have been with Barclays for 11 years now I started my career as a school leaver at the age of 17 as a Personal Banker in the West End. After 4 years as a Personal Banker, I decided to enrol in the Barclays 3 year degree programme once I graduated from university and whilst doing all the roles in the branch network I was offered a permanent position as a Branch Manager. After 2 years in that role, I wanted to expand my skill set and explore a different side to the business so I made a sideward move into Small Business!! Best decision I ever made!!

Why did you choose to work in Small business?

I decided to work in Small Business because this is where the journey starts for every single business out there. I wanted to understand business and also have a passion for developing people so this role seemed ideal for me.

What’s a typical day like in the role?

As a remote leader every day is different but a typical day for me would be shadowing a Small Business Manager in a customer’s appointment, conducting business reviews and meeting clients.

What is your favourite aspect of the job?

Developing people! I love seeing my teams capabilities grow and helping them achieve their ambitions in the right way.

What do you think are the key skills required for your role?

Organisation and people skills are crucial skills required in my role but also the ability to think strategically around the growth of Small Business as a whole. The ability to contribute regionally and nationally is essential.

What would be your biggest piece of advice for anyone considering a career in leadership within Business Banking?

Any role you move in to within leadership is bigger than just leadership, its about shared growth across the business and resilience in times of fast changing environments. Do your research before you enter any role and really assess the skills you are hoping to develop in the desired role.

What is the typical career path for people who work in the team?  Where do they tend to go next?

There are many possible careers paths from here such as a move into further leadership, senior branch management, strategic transformation, corporate bank etc.

What other teams and/or colleagues do you work with to complete your day to day role?

We work with a number of key business partners such as Barclaycard, digital, international, change managers.

Do you have any stories to demonstrate how Collaboration has helped you in your role and /or helped you achieve a great outcome for your clients or colleagues?

Since the introduction of direct it has been really great to visit Gadbrook to really understand how we can work closer together and also how we can communicate better to help our clients.

Tell us a bit about you, what do you do outside of work?

Aside from looking after my 2 boys (well, 3 if you include my husband), I have a real passion for fashion and spend a lot of my limited free time sketching and designing women’s business wear fashion pieces.
