My life as an Essential Banker

What I love about this job is I get to talk to people, which is my favourite thing to do.

My role is to deal with customers’ day-to-day transactions. Even though I’m on a part-time contract, the hours are stable, reliable and rarely change. I always know when I’m going to be working, which, as a single parent, works perfectly for me. If there is the odd occasion where I do have to do the full day, usually training, I’m given plenty of notice so that I can arrange childcare for those times. So it’s very predictable and fits exactly into my lifestyle.

I’ve only been with the business since May but I already feel like I’ve settled in really well. Everyone’s so friendly – it’s like a big network of colleagues – and becoming a part of that didn’t take long at all.

It’s a challenge, especially being a single parent, but you just get on with it. I like the idea that I’m making my kids proud and they’ve got a good role model to look up to. Showing my two children that people go to work every day is really important to me – in the background that I’m from, I didn’t grow up with that sort of message. I like to think that I’m showing my children a good lifestyle.

I suppose what I really like about Barclays is that I can leave work at work and still go home to be a parent. In my role, I don’t have to worry about paperwork and getting things done outside of the branch, things which eat into people’s personal lives a lot in other lines of work.
